spore, and user created content
Published by stephan March 20th, 2006 in art, gamesI’ve been lucky enough to see Will Wright speak, and to have lunch with him a few times. He’s brilliant: calling him the Steven Spielberg of videogames is too weak, there is really no one in any other industry with his level of deep thinking and relative level of influence. Spielberg, Lucas, Bergman, Allen, Altman, Hitchcock and Kubrick rolled into one is more accurate. His most noted works to date are SimCity and The Sims.
This video shows him demoing his newest game, Spore. I’ve heard him talk about this title in development for years, mostly in abstract terms referring to Charles and Ray Eames’ Powers of Ten. It looks like it may be the best game ever made, and it will be many years before the rest of the world catches up.
The video above is an excerpt of a longer video found here.
Wright is particularly important in that he uses games to express deep and complex topics that don’t immediately seem to be the sort of thing that would fit in a game, such as architecture, urban planning, philosophy, religion and evolution. The video is not to be missed.
