u tell me dear can usend me????
Published by stephan.com May 30th, 2004 in experiences, thoughts/rantsI hate Yahoo messenger. I have an account, and barely use it, because every time I connect there are like 50 messages from strangers wanting to add me to their friend’s list, and I get all sorts of messages from random strangers.
I suppose it is because my primary user name is my first name, which is semi-common. I have such a simple ID because I’ve been on Yahoo a looooong time, since it was in Jerry and Dave’s dorm room. I guess I’m annoyed that (a) it makes you approve OTHER PEOPLE adding you to their list, which I suppose is more secure than AIM, but annoying and (b) the service queues up all the requests and IM’s while you’re offline and then gives you a big annoying batch once you’re online. If you could just reject them as a list it would be nicer.
Anyway, I fired it up the other day, and wound up in this conversation:

stephan: Well, why have you messaged me this… umm, it would be afternoon there, wouldn’t it?

ravian_u2003: would u help me for a thing??
stephan: Closer to 1 AM here.
stephan: I doubt it… but ask.
ravian_u2003: ok
ravian_u2003: can u send me coin from here
stephan: Huh?

stephan: You mean, you’d like me to send you coins?
stephan: Oh.
stephan: Huh.
ravian_u2003: hobby
stephan: Interesting

stephan: I have some coins from other countries I’ve visited and lived.
stephan: I suppose I could send those as well.
ravian_u2003: really
stephan: Finnish Markka
stephan: Maybe some German coins
stephan: A British pound or two
ravian_u2003: i will be thank ful to u if u send me dear
stephan: Most of them are out of use now, since the Euro
stephan: Sort of odd, messaging random strangers in the middle of (their) night asking for coins…
ravian_u2003: yes its no matter i just want to collect them

On the other hand, I can’t think of any reason not to send them. I do, in fact, have a cache of foreign coins, most of which are worth little or nothing. Right now, in my hand, I have a Finnish 10 penniä, which was worth about a penny when the Finnish Markka even existed, though that currency has been replaced by the Euro. I’ve been trying to find something to do with them, though mostly they are for memories, or to have in case I travel again, so as to have some pocket change (old money should still be accepted) It’s maybe $3-$5 total.
Am I making a donation to a terrorist organization? Do they collect the coins and get them exchanged in bulk, making it worth it? Will I get in trouble sending these to someone? Why wouldn’t “she” give me her name? What’s this “medical colony?” If I do send them, I don’t plan to use my return address. Suggestions are welcome!
(update 23jun05 - I never did send the coins. And I still get at least a dozen random strangers a day trying to chat with me, which still freaks me out.)
