Oh, my

I just put a 1.2 Ghz upgrade card into my 400 Mhz powermac, the one I found at a thrift store for $60. The upgrade was $400, could have gotten 800 Mhz for $270, but was convinced to splurge.

Anyway, wow wow, a lot of stuff that I thought was net-intensive (loading a bunch of web pages) was really more processor-intensive (creating tabs, rendering web pages) and now runs, umm, too fast. :-) I’ll have to readjust. I’m used to a little pause when I start dragging things.

I ran a render this morning for about 2 1/2 hours, I’m gonna try that again, I’m guessing it’ll come out 45 min or so.

whoosh!!!!

(-)maybe: funny thing, After Effects now can’t seem to get more than 2/3 of the processor time, because now it’s waiting for the DISK :-) I can hear the hard drive whizzing to keep up with it. I suspect if I render to my internal drive instead of the external firewire, I might get another 20% or so, will try that later. But, that means I’ve got enough CPU left over to post to LJ without slowing down my render. Nice.

OK, the morning render took 2 hours 19 minutes, the re-render took 1 hour 7 minutes, which is about 50% speedup, rather than the 66%ish I would expect - but I did a lot of other stuff on the computer at the same time. Pleasant.

Tell the masses all about it
