Chains of affection

I was looking at this page of images of social and other networks linked from slashdot and found this cool paper:
Chains of affection: The structure of adolescent romantic and sexual networks (pdf)
The image is a network visualization of high school dating.

Maurizio Cattelan

the tiny but awesome Maurizio Cattelan Untitled, a little teeny and apparently functional elevator.

Day of Purity

OK, so I saw this article on CNN:
Teens promote abstinence with ‘Day of Purity’
I was just going to post the article with a warning to everyone: Don’t fuck!
But then, I noticed this line, which really made me hurl:
“The way sex is talked about, it’s so casual, like it’s an everyday thing, like going to McDonald’s,” [...]

no offense intended

gay marriage

As long as I’m pissing everyone off (I’ve worked my way through women and native americans recently), I might as well go for the triple crown here and come out as being vaguely against gay marriage.
I mean, my issue with it isn’t so much a problem with gay people (I have zero issues there) but [...]

outkast indian suit

OK, more crazy ultra-PC stuff. I just saw on CNN that CBS is being asked to apologize for another performance, in addition to Janet’s nipple-popping extravaganza.

Surfing

Locals all know better. This place has the fastest mirrors in the west. They’ll blow you away if you’re not careful. You can’t just go out there and grab for the big one - you’ve got to phase yourself in slowly.

Reminded me [...]

great story on Kuro5hin today, Journal of a Schizophrenic
Reminds me of one of my favorite science fiction stories, Multiples, which I must have first read when it was published in Omni in 1983.
Here’s a blurb about it:
Picture if you will a society where multiple personality disorder is regarded, at least in some quarters, as not [...]

Comprehension

I do not trouble my spirit to vindicate itself
or be understood.
I see that the elementary laws never apologize.

StephanCom: so, what did it do?
polyfluid: it kicked the duck in the butt.
polyfluid: and the duck rocked.
polyfluid: lol
StephanCom: hey, cool, I’ll post the pic on my server for you.
polyfluid: okay.
polyfluid: perfect
polyfluid: [...]
