In 1543 Copernicus published De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium showing that the earth revolved around the sun, dislodging man from his comfortable throne at the center of the universe.
Galileo was excommunicated for spreading these ideas. Near the end of his life, he was made to recant his teachings, denying their truth before church elders.
